What If LASIK Is Not Right For You
LASIK eye surgery should only be performed on a person who meets specific physical and medical conditions. The LASIK Evaluation at Atwal Eye Care will determine if your eyes are healthy enough and if you are physically healthy enough for the surgery. The truth is we have to reject some people for LASIK, but we always try to find an alternative vision correction procedure that would be more effective.
Some LASIK alternatives include:
If your corneas are too thin for LASIK, PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) or ASA (Advanced Surface Ablation) may be more effective. There is no corneal flap created during these procedures. Instead, the top layer on the epithelium (surface cells) is gently polished away to allow the surgeon access to the layer below. A laser is then used to reshape the cornea. It typically takes patients longer to recover and heal from PRK than with LASIK and it can be more uncomfortable. However, the final results of PRK are comparable to LASIK.
Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)
Refractive Lens Exchange involves replacing the eye’s natural lens with an Intraocular Lens (IOL). The surgery is basically the same as cataract surgery. Many patients over age 50 who want to correct their near and far vision opt for this type of procedure. The artificial lens will not lead to the development of cataracts in the future (which most older adults naturally develop).
