A Heart for Helping: Tristyn’s Story of Compassion

At Atwal Eye Care, caring for others goes far beyond what happens in our offices. For Tristyn Carpenter, an ophthalmic assistant at our Abbott Road location, that commitment to helping others took on an extraordinary meaning.

Tristyn has been part of the Atwal Eye Care family for nearly two years, beginning her journey as a Patient Service Representative before stepping into her current role as an ophthalmic assistant. In that time, she’s become known not only for her dedication to patient care, but for her deeply rooted desire to make a difference.

“I’ve always been an avid blood donor,” Tristyn shares. “So the jump to organ donation came pretty easily in my mind. If I have something I can live without that could benefit someone else, why not help?”

One day, while scrolling through social media, Tristyn came across a story that stopped her in her tracks – a young boy in urgent need of a kidney donor.

“As I read further, I realized we shared the same blood type,” she says. “I thought about how I had two functioning kidneys while this child had none. I immediately put in an application.”

What started as a simple moment of awareness quickly turned into action. When Tristyn received the call to move forward in the process, her initial surprise quickly turned into excitement. She was ready, not just emotionally, but physically, to take the next step, even if it meant traveling out of the area.

“I just thought that if the roles were reversed, I would hope someone might be willing to make the trip to help me too.”

It’s a perspective rooted in empathy and a powerful reminder of how deeply connected we all are. Although Tristyn ultimately was not able to donate, the experience left a lasting impression.

“Experiencing one of the possible impacts that I can make on the world has strengthened my resolve to try to make the world a better place in whatever small (or large) ways I can every day.”

Through this journey, she discovered something important about herself. She learned that even a “what if” can quickly become meaningful action when driven by purpose.

Behind Tristyn every step of the way was her Atwal Eye Care team. “My Abbott Road team has been extremely supportive! Big shoutout to Abby, Bekah and Sabrina for keeping me grounded and checking in on me throughout.”

Tristyn hopes her story encourages others to consider how they, too, can make an impact.

“I would wholeheartedly recommend living-donor donation to anyone who is interested. The process is easy, and the transplant team at UPMC Pittsburgh was amazing throughout.”

Her message is simple, but powerful: there are opportunities all around us to help others. We just have to be willing to take that first step!

At Atwal Eye Care, we’re proud to have team members like Tristyn who embody what it truly means to care. And it’s that spirit of courage and community that continues to define who we are.
