A Legacy of Care, Commitment and Compassion at Atwal Eye Care

For more than three decades, Kelly Heberlein has been a steady, compassionate presence at Atwal Eye Care. Her story is one rooted in loyalty and a deep commitment to both patients and team members.

Kelly first began working with Dr. Atwal in 1989, during a season of major life milestones. She was engaged to be married and continued working until her wedding in 1991. After briefly moving out of the area, Kelly returned back home in 1993 and went back to working for Atwal Eye Care. From that moment on, she never left.

“Atwal Eye Care has always been committed to quality care and the newest techniques and technology,” Kelly shares. “I’ve been proud to be a small part of its continued growth in the community.”

Throughout her career, Kelly has worn many hats and she continues to do so every day. Her role is incredibly diverse – ranging from pre-surgical testing and coordinating with the BASC (Buffalo Ambulatory Surgery Center) on upcoming cases, to ordering supplies, monitoring tech workups, assisting doctors, and training staff when needed. She also works closely with the HR team to ensure schedules run smoothly and efficiently.

Kelly credits much of her professional growth to strong mentors and family values. Her parents instilled a strong work ethic early on and working alongside the Atwal team only strengthened it.

“I’ve never stopped learning,” Kelly exclaims.

Ask Kelly what brings her the most fulfillment, and her answer is immediate: the patients!

One of her favorite parts of the job is following cataract patients through their entire journey – from pre-op measurements to their one-day post-op visit. “I love the look on their faces when they start reading the letters,” she says. “That moment never gets old.”

Some moments leave a lasting imprint. Kelly recalls a young patient from more than 20 years ago whose symptoms raised concern during a routine eye exam. After careful evaluation and further testing ordered by Dr. Atwal, a large, benign brain tumor was discovered. The patient underwent surgery just days later and made a full recovery.

“It’s moments like that,” Kelly reflects, “that remind you how important thorough, compassionate care truly is.”

Kelly believes wholeheartedly in the mission and people of Atwal Eye Care. From physicians and surgeons to management, receptionists, technicians, surgical counselors, and support staff – every role matters!

“We consistently update our policies, invest in the newest technologies and are committed to providing a positive experience for every patient.”

While her career is filled with accomplishments, Kelly says her greatest pride lies at home. She is the proud mother of three sons, all of whom have served our country. “They are incredible men – hardworking, kind and generous,” she shares. “I hope I’ve made them proud, too.”

Kelly’s story is the heart of Atwal Eye Care and is a reminder that exceptional care isn’t just about technology or technique, but about people who show up, stay committed and care deeply for decades.
