Celebrating Janice Sellick: Compassion in Every Patient Interaction

At Atwal Eye Care, our greatest strength has always been our people. Every member of our team plays an important role in helping patients protect and preserve one of life’s greatest gifts – their vision.

We’re proud to recognize Janice Sellick, a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) at our Sheridan office, as our our July “In Focus Recognition” recipient.

Janice’s journey in eye care spans more than two decades. She began working alongside Dr. Sirkin in 2003, and in 2014, they joined the Atwal Eye Care family together. Throughout her career, Janice has remained passionate about learning the importance of eye health while helping patients feel comfortable and cared for every step of the way.

What keeps her inspired after all these years? It’s simple.

“The people I work with and the patients we take care of.”

That compassion shines through in every interaction, often in ways patients never forget. One story, in particular, has stayed with Janice. A patient returned for an appointment and immediately recognized her from the previous year. Not because of a procedure or diagnosis, but because Janice had simply offered her an arm to hold while walking through the office.

“She never forgot that. Sometimes it’s the small things that can make the biggest impression.”

Moments like these perfectly capture what makes Janice such a valued member of the Atwal Eye Care team. Clinical excellence is essential, but kindness and empathy are what truly leave a lasting impact.

Janice also credits the incredible culture at the Sheridan office for making Atwal Eye Care such a special place to work.

“We’re like a family. The doctors are wonderful and always willing to answer any questions you may have and teach you anything you would like to learn.”

She appreciates Atwal Eye Care’s commitment to educating both patients and the community through initiatives, like lunch & learn events, the Dry Eye Clinic, vision correction nights, blood drives, kidney walks and many other community outreach efforts.

One of Janice’s proudest professional accomplishments has been earning her Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) certification, a milestone that reflects her dedication to continuing education and providing the highest quality care.

Outside the office, Janice enjoys baking, spending time with her family and taking advantage of Western New York’s beautiful weather by being outdoors whenever she can.

When asked what advice she’d give someone who feels nervous about an eye appointment, her answer is both reassuring and heartfelt.

“It’s normal to be nervous. Share your concerns with the staff and your doctor. They’ll explain everything they’re doing and why. In the end, it’s so important to have your eyes checked because you only have one set of eyes.”

Looking back on her years at Atwal Eye Care, Janice says she’s most proud to be part of a team that has grown tremendously while continuing to make a meaningful difference throughout the community.

“I’m proud to be part of a team that has impressively grown, helping everyone from our professional athletes to everyday people in need.”

Janice’s story is a reminder that exceptional patient care isn’t always found in grand gestures. Sometimes, it’s the simple act of offering a helping hand, taking the time to listen or making someone feel at ease that leaves the greatest impact.

Thank you, Janice, for the countless ways you make our patients feel cared for. Congratulations on being named our July “In Focus Recognition” recipient.
