LASIK and UV Protection: Safeguarding Your Eyes During Outdoor Activities

LASIK surgery is a popular and effective solution for correcting vision problems, specifically refractive errors. While the procedure itself is relatively quick and straightforward, post-operative care is crucial to ensure optimal healing and vision results. One of the most important aspects of post-LASIK care is protecting your eyes from ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The corneal flap created during LASIK needs time to heal properly. During this healing period, your eyes are particularly vulnerable to environmental factors, including UV radiation.

After LASIK, your eye surgeon will provide you with a list of what to expect in the hours, days, weeks and months of recovery. Although you likely won’t be restricted from most of your regular activities, during the first 3 to 4 months of surgery, you should avoid activities that may irritate the surface of your eyes, including limiting your time outside especially during peak sunlight hours, safeguarding your eyes during outdoor activities.

The eyes are more sensitive to light during LASIK recovery. This increased sensitivity can make you more susceptible to photokeratitis and discomfort. Exposure to UV radiation can increase the risk of complications such as corneal haze, where the cornea becomes clouded, potentially affecting vision quality. UV exposure can also lead to conditions like pterygium (a growth on the white of the eye) and cataracts over time. Protecting your eyes from UV rays helps ensure that the corneal flap heals smoothly and reduces the risk of inflammation or other issues that could interfere with the healing process. Keep in mind that LASIK healing is gradual, and vision may fluctuate in the first few weeks as the eyes heal. Consistent use of UV protection is paramount to stabilize vision and prevent complications.

Effective strategies to protect the eyes from UV radiation start with follow up care to monitor the health of your eyes and following the specific instructions on post-operative care. In your daily activities outdoors, wear UV-protective sunglasses that block 100% UVA and UVB rays; wrap-around styles provide an extra layer of protection for the sides of your eyes. Additionally, wear a wide-brimmed hat and stay in the shade whenever possible. Limit your time outside during the hours of 10am and 4pm when UV radiation is strongest.
