Atwal Eye Care’s Internship Affiliation with the University at Buffalo (UB)
Atwal Eye Care is proud to highlight its growing partnership with the University at Buffalo (UB) through a hands-on internship program designed to educate and inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals. This collaboration brings bright, motivated students directly into our clinical setting—offering real-world experience while supporting our mission of delivering high-quality, patient-centered care.

Why We Partnered with UB
The decision to establish an internship affiliation with UB was driven by a shared commitment to excellence in education and a desire to invest in the future of healthcare. As fewer professionals enter the field of eye care, Atwal Eye Care saw an opportunity to bridge the gap between academic learning and clinical practice by offering students meaningful exposure to real patient environments.
“We were inspired by the growing need for skilled professionals. This program helps students build professional confidence and learn what compassionate care truly looks like in action.”
— Debbie Davis, CEO, Atwal Eye Care

What Sets UB Students Apart
University at Buffalo students stand out not only for their academic excellence, but also for the rich cultural diversity they bring to the clinic. As the flagship of the SUNY system and one of the most international universities in the country, UB prepares students with the professional and interpersonal skills needed to thrive in today’s evolving healthcare landscape.
A Day in the Life: Student Perspective

Miranda, one of the UB interns, shared her experience:
“I started every day at 8 a.m. and worked alongside the ophthalmic technicians, helping take patients back for their workups, putting in dilation drops, setting up exam rooms, and more. I even had the opportunity to observe surgeries—including cataract and LASIK procedures—and watch the OR team in action. It was truly fascinating.”
She also shared how the internship connected with her own professional goals:
“As an aspiring medical device sales representative, this experience taught me so much about operating room etiquette, timing, and the realities of a surgeon’s day-to-day life. It was eye-opening—no pun intended!”
The Value of Mentorship
Miranda described the Atwal team as welcoming and supportive:
“My first few days felt overwhelming, but everyone was so encouraging and willing to teach. You learn a little more each time you take a patient back, and eventually, you find your rhythm. I never felt left in the dark.”
This supportive environment is exactly what Atwal Eye Care strives to offer all interns.
“We want students to walk away with both skills and confidence. It’s about more than just learning tasks—it’s about discovering a passion for patient care.”
— Debbie Davis, CEO, Atwal Eye Care
Real-World Impact
Interns at Atwal Eye Care are involved in a variety of essential tasks, from chart prep and patient intake to organizing medical records and assisting with clinical setup. Their contributions allow technicians and providers to focus on higher-level care, improving clinic efficiency and the overall patient experience.

“Having interns on our team helps us deliver smoother day-to-day operations, especially during high-volume times.”
— Debbie Davis, CEO, Atwal Eye Care
A Program with Room to Grow
With such positive outcomes, Atwal Eye Care is actively looking to expand its internship offerings. This includes increasing the number of placements, involving students in a broader range of clinical and administrative roles, and potentially forming new academic partnerships.
“We see this as a long-term investment in our community and in the future of healthcare in Western New York.”
— Debbie Davis, CEO, Atwal Eye Care
Advice for Future Interns
When asked what she would say to others considering the program, Miranda shared:
“Go in with an open mind—even if eye care isn’t your main focus. The eyes reveal so much about human anatomy and health. You’ll gain a new appreciation for how everything is connected.”
A Model for the Future
Atwal Eye Care’s affiliation with UB demonstrates the powerful impact that academic-clinical partnerships can have on both students and healthcare providers. It’s a win-win: students gain invaluable hands-on learning, while the practice benefits from fresh energy, eager learners, and a direct connection to the future of medicine.
“If you value education, mentorship, and patient care, this type of partnership is a smart investment in the future.”
— Debbie Davis, CEO, Atwal Eye Care
